Stroll along Deal Seafront 

There’s so much to explore and enjoy in Deal and Deal Seafront! Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, which stretches for several kilometres and offers many attractions and activities. If you’re hungry, head to Beach Street, located near the beach, and discover the many pubs, restaurants, fish and chips shops, and unique cafes in the area.

As you approach Deal Castle, you’ll see fishing boats on the shingle beach, where local fishermen sell freshly caught seafood. Keep an eye out for the stalls that display the fish and seafood for sale on blackboards – they’re not to be missed!

If you’re in the mood to shop, check out the souvenir shops and independent stores in Old Town and Middle Street. You’re sure to find some unique treasures!

Stroll along Deal Pier

If you’re looking for a relaxing and enjoyable activity in Deal, a stroll along the Deal Pier is a must! This historic pier has been a beloved destination for locals since the 1950s, but it was initially built back in 1838. With its impressive length of over 1000 feet and an extension of 300 metres into the sea, you’ll be treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of the Deal seafront, coastline, and even France on clear days! 

While there aren’t many activities on the pier except dining at the Deal Pier Kitchen Restaurant at the end, the views make it well worth the visit. Walking along the dock, you can breathe fresh sea air and watch fishermen casting their lines. 

Plus, if you’re a fishing enthusiast, the pier is the perfect spot for you! It’s fascinating to note that the dock used to be the departure point for ferries crossing the English Channel. With plenty of seating options, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning scenery.

Relax at Deal Beach, one of the best things to do in Deal

While in Deal, you must check out the gorgeous and peaceful Deal Beach. It’s the perfect spot to stroll along the promenade and enjoy the breathtaking views. If you’re brave enough to face the chilly water, you can even go for a swim! When I visited on a bank holiday, the beach was practically empty, which made for a wonderfully serene experience. Personally, I found the Walmer side of the beach to be particularly charming, what with the fishing boats and white beach huts.

Visit the TimeBall Tower Museum

If you’re interested in Deal’s maritime history, you should check out the Timeball Tower Museum. It’s situated in an actual timeball tower that was once used to signal the time to ships sailing nearby. These timeballs were essential for accurate navigation, and you’ll learn all about their importance and the town’s fascinating shipping heritage during your visit. 

The museum is housed in a Grade II listed building, so it’s worth a look. Plus, if the weather’s nice and you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb to the top for incredible town views and coastline views. If you’re visiting during the summer, catch the ball dropping every hour from 9am to 5pm. It’s a unique experience you won’t want to miss!

Explore Deal Castle

Have you checked out Deal Castle yet? It’s an exciting fortress on the coast, built in the 16th century during King Henry VIII’s reign. You can find it on Prince of Wales Terrace, towards the southern end of Deal Seafront. 

If you’re into history and architecture, you’ll be blown away by this Tudor fort. It was built to defend against invasions from Europe (especially the Catholics), and it’s one of only three artillery castles along the coastline. Despite everything that’s happened over the years (including the Second World War), it’s still pretty much the same as ever! 

When you visit, you can explore most of the castle grounds and see all kinds of excellent exhibits and artefacts. But the real highlight is climbing onto the battlements for a fantastic panoramic view. You can even check out some old cannons that used to be pointed right at the English Channel!

Check out Deal Memorial Bandstand

As you continue your wall down the Deal seafront, check out the Deal Memorial Bandstand. This place was built to honour the memory of the eleven members of the Band of the Royal School of Music who tragically lost their lives in the 1989 IRA bombing at the Royal Marines School of Music. 

The bandstand’s unique 12-sided shape proudly showcases the names of those who gave their lives. You can find it tucked away on Walmer Green, a serene and beautiful spot perfect for enjoying a lovely picnic with your loved ones. And if you happen to be there on a Sunday afternoon during the summer, you’re in for a real treat with live band performances.

Discover Walmer Castle and Gardens

This guide to the things to do in Deal doesn’t only cover the seaside town but the surrounding cities too. While exploring the seafront, you won’t miss out on the impressive Walmer Castle and Gardens. The gardens are stunning, and the castle is a real piece of history, dating back to the reign of Henry VII. 

Originally built to protect the coast, it later became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and the Duke of Wellington. Make sure to explore all the different rooms to get a feel for the castle’s fascinating past. And, of course, you’ll want to spend some time wandering around the gardens, too – it’s the perfect spot to take a peaceful walk and soak up the beautiful surroundings.

A fun thing to do while in Deal is rent a bike to discover the charming coastline and cycle along the stunning coastal path. Hut 55, situated close to Deal Castle, provides bike rentals and well as nice coffee. Follow the seafront path towards Walmer and take the chance to visit the impressive castle and its delightful gardens. On the other side of the Deal, you will find Sandown Castle Community Garden. The park is well-maintained and filled with lovely flowering plants, providing a peaceful and serene oasis. You can also enjoy stunning views of the English Channel, particularly at sunset. Additionally, it’s a great starting point for walks on the beach or exploring the nearby nature reserve. 

Eat fish and chips

A trip to the British seaside isn’t complete without a meal of fish and chips. Deal is a great place to find some of England’s best fish and chips shops, as evidenced by the long queues outside their doors. While many reasonable options exist, we highly recommend Middle Street Fish Bar on Middle Street. They offer generous portions, and though you can eat on-site, we suggest taking your meal to the seafront for the best experience. There’s nothing quite like enjoying your deliciously crispy breaded fish while enjoying the beautiful view. However, be careful of the seagulls while enjoying your meal.

Visit the Deal Maritime & Local History Museum

Located in an old industrial building, the Deal Maritime and Local History Museum is a beautiful place to dive into the rich maritime heritage of this quaint Kent town. From April to October, you can explore the history of Deal, which used to be a thriving fishing and smuggling town. You’ll see models, life-size boats, and locally discovered artefacts on display. It’s worth a visit!

Explore Middle Street and the historic old town centre

Exploring the Old Town centre is always a delightful experience. The town has managed to maintain its charming and traditional character over the years. The mix of Georgian and Victorian houses and fishermen’s cottages add to the picturesque vibe. You’ll love the pastel-coloured buildings and winding cobbled streets – they’re so lovely! Back in the 18th century, Deal was famous for smuggling, and you can still see the maze of narrow streets and alleyways that smugglers used to hide silk, tobacco, tea, and other goods before being sold in the black market. Take your time to explore the independent shops and relax in one of the many cosy cafes. 

Discover Deal’s art and cultural scene

If you’re a fan of art, you’ll enjoy exploring the various galleries in the area. Make sure to visit the Seaward Gallery, where you can admire some genuinely unique paintings. If you are in town during the summer, check out the Deal Music & Arts Festival. This two-week-long event features music performances happening all over town, and it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture. Alternatively, if you’re visiting in early September, the Smugglers Festival is also worth checking out, especially if you’re a music fan. 

Go Shopping for Souvenirs

As mentioned, the town centre has lots of independent shops where you can browse unique gifts to take home. Among the many shops, do not miss the Hoxton Store. The shop has many lovely special items such as homeware, colourful cushions and Moorish rugs. There’s also Dunlin & Diver, a shop selling items by up-and-coming and well-known artists and designers. You will find lovely ceramics, prints and more. 

Music lover? Then head to Smugglers Records to try your luck and find that unique record. Smugglers Records is a must-visit, where you can try your luck and search for that particular record.

One such place is 81 Beach Street, which has been a part of Deal’s restaurant scene for over 15 years. This restaurant is well-known for its use of local ingredients in their dishes. 

If you’re looking for a unique dining experience, you should check out Deal Pier Kitchen at the end of Deal Pier. This restaurant offers a range of options from breakfast to lunch and brunch. They cater to dietary restrictions such as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal with a water view.

There are multiple trains throughout the day, and the journey typically takes between 90 minutes to 2 hours each way. If you book in advance, train tickets to Deal start at £12 for a one-way trip. Getting around Deal

The train station is just a short distance from the town, taking less than 10 minutes to get there. To reach the seafront and Deal Pier, simply stroll down Queen Street and continue until you reach the end of the road. Exploring the town’s attractions can be done on foot since it’s a small town. However, if you plan to visit Walmer Castle, which is located in another city, you may need a car, public transportation, or a bike to get there.
