Kokemushiro Moss Garden Cafe, a Hidden Gem in Ehime

Kokemushiro Moss Garden Cafe: I can’t remember how my friend came to learn of this moss garden cafe’s existence, but I was delighted she did. Hidden in a cedar forest in Seiyo City, the heart of the Japanese countryside, Kokemushiro Cafe is a secret haven for nature lovers. After visiting Sankeien Garden, I was happy to discover this secret place.
We stopped by the cafe on our way to Matsuyama from exploring the Uwajima. As we left the parking lot, you were welcomed by a stone pathway leading us to the beautiful garden. More than the typical garden, the atmosphere was more like a little house in the woods. There were lots of trees, greens leaves and beds of moss.
Kokemushiro Café
The wooden cafe has a lovely small terrace nicely decorated with things made by the owner. We took our shoes off when we entered the cafe and wore slippers. This is made to preserve the tatami mats. You have on your left a shop selling items crafted by the owners of the cafe and local artisans, while the other side is the cafe. We visited in November, so it was a little cold, but the stove kept everyone warm and cosy.
The menu is straightforward: you only have a choice of tea or coffee, no skinny latte or frappucino was on offer there! We opted for matcha green tea with their delicious sweets. From our seats, we could admire the scenery available in front of us. As well as the terrace, there were several seatings available scattered around the cafe.

On a warmer day, seating outside will give customers the possibility to immerse themselves in the natural environment while listening to the pure quietness of the location. I can easily imagine how enchanting it will be in summer or even spring. I think it would be amazing in winter too with the moss covered in white snow.

When to Visit Kokemushiro
The moss garden changes completely with the seasons: vivid, almost glowing green in the humid months of late spring and summer, fiery maple accents in autumn (when we visited, warmed by the stove), and a hushed, frosty stillness in winter. Moss loves moisture, so don’t be put off by a drizzly day — that’s when the garden looks its most alive.
Tips for Visiting
- A car is essential — the café hides in the hills of rural Seiyo City, and public transport won’t get you there
- Bring cash, as small countryside cafés in Japan rarely take cards
- You’ll take your shoes off at the door to protect the tatami, so easy footwear helps
- Opening days can be limited in the countryside — check ahead before making the drive
- The menu is simple by design: tea or coffee with homemade sweets, best enjoyed slowly with the garden view
